State of the parties

Nearly all MPs are members of a political party. The list view shows how many MPs from each party there are in the House of Commons. There are 650 MPs in total.

If an MP is not a member of a political party in Parliament, they are shown as an ‘Independent’. This includes MPs elected as Independent candidates. It also includes MPs who no longer ‘have the party whip’. This means these MPs have been removed from their political party in Parliament.

The Labour party forms a majority government. Their current working majority is 166. This takes into account the non-voting Speaker and their deputies, and non-sitting Sinn Féin MPs.
